VR to ease pain and anxiety

Erik Dekker is submitted to Haga Hospital with four broken ribs and a collapsed lung after a fall down the stairs. With the VR glasses on, he can relax for a bit.

Acute pain is a combination of physical damage and the interpretation of that by our brain. What if we can occupy and immerse the brain to the point that it has little room left to notice and experience pain? That’s where virtual reality comes in.

Since the beginning of this year, Haga Hospital has been using virtual reality (VR) to ease pain, stress and anxiety in patients in their hospital. VR is a scientifically proven method, almost every patient loves to use it, and the only side effects can be dizziness and nausea. A great addition to, or even replacement of, opioids and other addictive painkillers.
